That will stop the game from opening any new gates, so the 10 that opened when you got to Weynon Priory will be it. So open the console and type: set MQ00.MaxOpenGates to 0 The problem is that the game is now set to continually have ~10 Oblivion gates open - when you close one, it'll open another (if you were going through the main quest normally, as things progressed that total number of gates would continue to increase). You've done your part, and now it's up to the Blades. Instead of following them, just turn around and leave. When you all arrive there, Martin and Jauffre will get off their horses and go through the gates, without saying anything to you. Go along with Jauffre's request and escort him and Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple. Arriving at Weynon Priory will trigger the first Oblivion gates to open - 10 of them total. Finish up in Kvatch and talk to Martin, then escort him to Weynon Priory (that way, you've done what Jauffre asked).

My favorite point to drop it fits naturally into the story, but requires a console command to work right. If you don't talk to Martin, he'll just go down to the refugee camp with the rest of the townspeople and stay there. The next good point to drop it is after breaking the siege of Kvatch. All that's required then is to ignore the turn-off to Kvatch - if you never go there, then nothing more happens. The easiest point at which to drop the main quest is after delivering the amulet to Jauffre. It just doesn't interest me much, and it only rarely actually fits the characters I play.
